Amy Adams stars as a cover girl for the April 2016 issue of Allure magazine, photographed by Carter Smith and styled by Paul Cavaco.
Here’s something you don’t hear much outside Hollywood: “I don’t do a lot when I’m not red-carpeting,” says Amy Adams. “I feel more authentically myself if I’m a bit more natural.” She let us in on her beauty must-haves.
Allure: Do you have an anti-aging skin-care regimen?
Amy Adams: When I’m working and wearing a lot of makeup, I use Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser because I have very reactive skin. But at home, I just use water. For moisturizer, I use La Mer. At first I was like, I can’t use this! It’s so expensive and fancy, and J.Lo uses it! But it has saved my face.
What’s the worst beauty advice you’ve ever gotten?
That I needed to bleach my skin. I was getting a facial, and a woman put something on me, and it started to burn. I was like, ‘What is this?’ She said, ‘Skin lightener.’ I was like, ‘Get this off immediately!’
What was your look in junior high?
I got a perm at one point because I wanted to look like Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. I didn’t. I [thought] somehow a perm would transform me into a very sexy, tall, powerful, broad-shouldered woman. I was like four-foot-nine, flat-chested, and 89 pounds at 14.
How many lipsticks are in your bag right now?
Two, but this is an edited bag. Normally, five to eight.
Do you currently have a signature perfume?
I have a collection. I’ve always wanted to find a signature scent, but I’m too fickle. Tom Ford recently gave me one that’s really musky and spicy. I’m really into that for a night out. TokyoMilk makes one called Tainted Love that’s very vanilla-y, which I like.
What’s one beauty ritual you do before a date?
Flossing. It’s not romantic, but it’s very important!
